Te Tūranga | About the role:

This HSE Manager role will support the delivery of a major automation upgrade at our Finegand site in Balclutha.

This is a brownfield project, so you’ll be working across live operations, construction activity, and multiple contractors at the same time. Your role will be to ensure everything comes together under a single, clear, and effective health, safety, and environmental approach that enables the project to be delivered safely and successfully.

You’ll work closely with a primary contractor (a leading design & build contractor for process and industrial facilities), project team, and on-site operational leaders, including the site Health & Safety team, acting as the key connector to ensure alignment, coordination, and strong safety outcomes.

The role is heavily project-focused, with a core emphasis on managing simultaneous operations (SIMOPS), coordinating multiple PCBUs, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements throughout the lifecycle of the upgrade.

From integrating contractor safety plans and managing project risk, through to leading incident response and supporting regulatory engagement, your work will be critical in ensuring the project is delivered safely, compliantly, and without disruption to operations.

This is a fixed-term project position. Our Finegand plant is based in Balclutha and will require an on-site presence for the duration of the project – we estimate this role will be required until the end of 2027.

Ōu Pūkenga | About You:

You are an experienced Health & Safety leader who thrives in complex, high-risk environments, particularly where construction or project activity intersects with live operations.

You bring a practical, hands-on approach, and you’re confident influencing contractors, leaders, and stakeholders to ensure safe outcomes in dynamic environments.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Proven experience in Health & Safety leadership roles within construction, manufacturing, infrastructure, or similar environments
  • Experience working on or supporting capital projects, upgrades, or brownfield developments
  • Strong understanding of Health and Safety at Work Act requirements, including multi-PCBU environments
  • Demonstrated experience managing simultaneous operations (SIMOPS)
  • Experience coordinating contractors and integrating multiple HSE systems
  • Confidence working with regulators and supporting compliance obligations
  • Experience with environmental management and working within consented or regulated environments will be highly regarded
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience)

Key attributes we’re looking for:

  • Strong risk management and problem-solving capability
  • Ability to influence and align multiple stakeholders and contractors
  • Confident communicator who can challenge unsafe practices when required
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage complexity and competing priorities
  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement
